This is a wonderful orange wine made with Silvaner grapes in Franken, Germany.

2Naturkinder are known to use their own bat dung in their vineyards which is why many of their labels feature bats

Production details of Zweite Heimat: Zweite Heimat (previously called Kleine Heimat) is 2Naturkinder's Silvaner orange wine, made from a single plot in Rödelsee in Franken, Germany. The vines were planted in 1989 on Keuper bedrock. The Silvaner is destemmed and crushed, then macerates on its skins for ten days. 2Naturkinder farm with a lunar-calendar approach and famously use bat dung from a nearby colony to fertilise the soil.

Tasting Notes: We have not yet tried this vintage of Zweite Heimat by 2Naturkinder, but we hear it has notes of orange zest, pear, apricot and a textured skin-contact finish.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

WHAT IS ORANGE WINE?

Orange wines are actually white wines, but with a different winemaking process - they’re made by fermenting the juice with the grape skins, which is mostly done with red wines, not white. This extra step adds tannins, flavor, and a unique color to the wine.
Because of the skin contact, orange wines tend to have more herbal, aromatic notes, and they can also have a bit of bitterness depending on the grape, how long the skins are left in contact with the juice, and the vessel used for maturation. Unlike most white wines, they can also feature tannins (which are formed from the skins, which white wines do not use). Orange wines are a style that brings out some really interesting flavors that many people adore for their unique properties, whether easy going or complex.
