NATURAL WINES BY ODA FAMILY MARANI
Oda Family Marani is Keto Ninidze and Zaza Gagua, who left Tbilisi in 2015 for Martvili in Samegrelo, western Georgia. The name comes from the traditional wooden oda house with a terrace all around, built in 1933 by Zaza's great-grandfather. Zaza is a geographer, and in 2012 he co-founded Vino Martville, which helped bring winemaking back to Samegrelo. Keto was a journalist and was named Woman Farmer of the Year in 2018.
They replaced a hazelnut orchard with vines and ferment with wild yeasts in qvevri. They make wine from western grapes like Tsolikouri and Ojaleshi, plus Orbeluri Ojaleshi and Dzelshavi, some from the Orbeli vineyard at around 700 metres. The Glass Wall is a rosé of Tsolikouri from qvevri and Ojaleshi from steel, and IRINA is mostly Tsolikouri with some Orbeluri Ojaleshi. Keto uses labels like Naked Ojaleshi to speak about the role of women in wine.
