Saint-Aubin 'Le Ban' 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Domaine Derain, in the Burgundy region in France. This red wine is made with 100% Pinot Noir grapes, grown on vines on hillsides, 60 ares of approximately sixty years old and 23 ares of approximately seven years old. The vineyards are south-facing, all on gravelly clay-limestone soil.

Vinification and aging: Vinification in conical wooden vats.
80% destemmed for 18 days of maceration and aged for 11 months in 228 L barrels.

How was Le Ban by Domain Derain taste?

Expect a big mouthfeel bursting with dark forest fruit and a foresty finish tingling with subtle hints of mushroom and earth. This wine will only get better with time, but already has a great zippy mouthfeel with lots of energy and finesse. A top wine for sure!

Who runs Domain Derain in Burgundy?

Julien Altaber now runs the domaine with his wife and partner Carole Schwab, and interestingly founder Dominique Derain is also never too far away, still involved in the cellar tastings, even waxing the bottles when not travelling to other vineyards across the world in retirement. Julien Altaber and Carole also run the winery Sextant from the same cellar. This began as a side project for Julien when he was the right hand man for Dominque Derain over many years before taking over the estate. Now both are run side by side.
