NATURAL WINES BY SEPP & MARIA MUSTER
Sepp and Maria Muster farm in southern Styria and are one of the five members of Schmecke das Leben, 'taste life', a group of Styrian natural winemakers who share the same approach to nature. Their farm sits on the Schlossberg in Leutschach and is documented back to 1727. Sepp took over in 2000. They work 10 steep hectares by hand, training vines high on chestnut posts.
Their vom Opok wines are named after the local marl soil, while Erde, Gräfin and Graf Morillon are more serious wines that age for years. Everything ferments spontaneously in large old casks, plus some clay amphorae, and stays there for around 20 months, generally with no added sulphur. Gräfin is Sauvignon Blanc with two to four weeks on the skins and Erde is Sauvignon Blanc and Morillon macerated for a full year. Their son Elias now makes his own, like the Sauvignon Blanc Coprivus.
