Savagnin Ouillé 'Les Trouillots' 2022

Savagnin Ouillé 'Les Trouillots' 2022 is a natural wine crafted by Les Pieds sur Terre (Valentin Morel), in the Jura region in France. This white wine is made with Savagnin grapes, made in the barrel topped-up Ouillé style of Jura, more modern than oxidative ways generally more common in the past. 

Based in Poligny, home to the Comté museum where just a month or so ago we spend a silly money on as much Comté merch as possible, this region does not get as much attention as Arbois, Pupillin or Rotalier but is home to many a fantastic vineyard, and Valentin inherited a fair few good ones from his father, which he converted to organic. He’s often seen as a young winemaker, and I suppose in comparison he is, but it’s his mindset that makes him stand out, especially when it comes to the future of viticulture and the use of Hybrid grapes, which he covers in his French book which will come out this year in English (we are likely to stock it)

Les Trouillots is his most premium plot, made as a ouillé Savagnin and its pretty powerful in energy and emotion! Perhaps his most special wine… No additions as always with him and aged for 2 years in barrels. The grapes are grown on Lias limestone soils

The 2022 is really singing right now: think apple biscuits, citrus zest, a clean streak of flint, dried apricots, walnuts and a gentle mild spiced warmth on the finish. Expressive, bold, precise and super drinkable but extremely gastronomic too, with excellent aging potential. 

We love this wine and producer and wish there was more of his wines to go around!
