NATURAL WINES BY PINYOLET VINYATERS

Pinyolet Vinyaters is a tiny project in Terra Alta, inland Catalonia, run by Josep Piñol. The vineyards face east at around 120 to 150 metres on clay-limestone soils, with old bush vines of about 50 years alongside younger plantings of around 20. Some plots are tiny: the Macabeu for Lluna i Mitja comes from half a hectare on three terraces.

The cellar work is simple: free-run juice, native ferments, skin contact where it fits, time on the lees and no added sulphites. Sinestèsia Tinto is Garnatxa Negra with a 10-day maceration in stainless steel, and the Sinestèsia Rosat is red Garnatxa macerated on Garnatxa Blanca skins. Lluna i Mitja is an orange Macabeu with 15 days on the skins and a slightly oxidative edge. The wines are sunny but fresh with a salty streak. Start with the Sinestèsia Blanca, fresh with a creamy texture.
