NATURAL WINES BY PIRI NATUREL
PIRI Naturel is the natural wine label of Christine Pieroth in Burg Layen, in Germany's Nahe. Her family has grown vines here since 1781, and she set up PIRI to keep her own wines apart from the family's classic range. She works around 12 hectares on a patchwork of slate, quartzite, sandy gravel and red clay, with Riesling, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Dornfelder and Scheurebe, plus some fungus-resistant PIWI grapes.
The wines ferment with wild yeasts in big traditional Stückfass barrels, used oak and steel, some with whole bunches or weeks on the skins, and most get little or no added sulphur. Her labels show leaves and plants gathered around the vineyards, hand printed on fabric and then digitised. Ponderosa, a skin-contact Pinot Gris with Pinot Noir, is the one people come back for. Aurora blends Riesling with PIWI grapes.
