Barolo 2021 by Ferdinando Principiano is a 13.5% natural wine made in Piedmont with the local, highly prized Nebbiolo grapes. Expect violets, red berries, pepper, tobacco and a plummy, liquorice, spicy kick.

Chewy tannins, which are present but also delicate. Still young

Like most Barolo, this elegant, classic in style yet still natural wine will age gracefully, but is made in a way which is fresh and approachable in its youth

Production Details: Principiano's Barolo comes from vineyards in Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga in Piedmont. The soils are limestone, clay, and sand. Some of the Nebbiolo vines date back to 1934. Fermentation happens in stainless steel. The wine is aged in large wooden barrels — 20 to 40 hectolitres — for an extended period, allowing gradual extraction and complexity.

Tasting Notes: We have not yet tried the 2021 vintage of Barolo by Ferdinando Principiano, but we hear it has notes of cherry, tar, licorice, roses, and considerable tannin structure.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

Ferdinando Principiano

NATURAL WINES BY FERDINANDO PRINCIPIANO

Ferdinando Principiano is based in Monforte d'Alba in the Barolo zone of Piedmont. His family has grown vines in the Langhe since the mid-1700s, and he set up his own estate in 1993 on land he inherited. He works 21 hectares across Monforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba. That includes six hectares of Boscareto in Serralunga, on harder limestone-rich Tortonian soils, and 1.4 hectares of Ravera in Monforte, on heavy Helvetian clay.

Fermentations start on their own in stainless steel, and no sulphur goes in from harvest until malolactic is finished. The Nebbiolo then ages in large Slavonian oak botti, and the Barolo comes from Boscareto and Ravera. Alongside Barolo and Langhe Nebbiolo he makes Barbera, Freisa and rarities like Timorasso and Slarina. Dosset is his Dolcetto with no added sulphur, light and juicy.
