NATURAL WINES BY QUARTICELLO
Quarticello is Roberto Maestri's estate in Montecchio Emilia, in the Val d'Enza where the provinces of Reggio Emilia and Parma meet. He set it up in 2001. He works about five hectares of vines at 100 to 200 metres, on clay and sand with layers of gravel. The vines are 10 to 40 years old: Lambrusco Maestri, Salamino and Grasparossa, Malbo Gentile, Spergola and Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, farmed holistically.
Most of it sparkles the old Emilian way: wild fermentation, then bottling with some of its own grape must, kept cold since harvest, to ferment again in the bottle. Ferrando is a pink Lambrusco from Salamino with no added sulphur, and Neromaestri is the dark, dry one. There are still wines as well: Le Mole is a skin-contact Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, and Bordone is made from Malbo Gentile, a rare local red grape.
