NATURAL WINES BY PATRICE BÉGUET
Patrice Béguet farms about 4 hectares spread across Pupillin, Arbois and Mesnay in the Jura, working with Chardonnay, Poulsard, Savagnin and Trousseau. An old Alpine sheep breed grazes between the vines in winter. His domaine wines carry the name Domaine Hughes Béguet, after his grandfather, and the labels use an early 1900s lithograph from the grandfather's days distilling gentian root.
In the cellar he likes to experiment, with long macerations and a mix of stainless steel, egg-shaped vessels and old oak. Jazz and the Jura landscape are his big influences, and many wines are named after songs, like Straight No Chaser and Orange was the colour of her dress. Big Bunch Theory is his négoce range, with fruit from growers outside the Jura, such as Grenache Blanc from Mont Ventoux and Melon de Bourgogne from Muscadet, under labels painted by Aya Sato.
