Tasting Notes for Charles Frey NV Crémant Extra Brut

This vintage of Crémant Extra Brut from Charles Frey is a well-balanced, fresh, and lively sparkling wine showcasing aromas of ripe white fruits, toasted brioche, subtle nutty notes, and a citrus freshness. There is a classic feel to this, with some added sulphites keeping it in the classic style of natural. The kind of natural wine which you could give to your grandparents and they would not know it was, but it is (if you know what we mean with this classic, low intervention style)

On the palate, it offers a fine and energetic mousse. The extended 30 months of ageing on the lees contributes additional fruitiness, complexity, and a delicate texture, resulting in a wine that is elegant

Production Process of Charles Frey Natural Wine Crémant Extra Brut NV

The natural wine Crémant Extra Brut NV from the producer Charles Frey is made using a base wine of Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Riesling that is fermented and raised in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and old large oak foudres. It then undergoes a second fermentation and is aged in bottle on the lees using the traditional method. The wine is aged on the lees in the bottle for 30 months sur lattes

NATURAL WINES BY CHARLES FREY

The Frey family, originally Swiss, settled in Dambach-la-Ville in Alsace in the early 1700s. The modern domaine began in 1958 with 0.75 hectares given to Charles Frey, and today the family owns 14 hectares, including vines on the granite Grand Cru Frankstein. In 1997 his son Dominique stopped using chemicals, among the first in Alsace to do so, and the story goes that Charles picked nettles for the sprays at night so the neighbours would not laugh. Dominique's sons Julien and Thiébaud now run it.

Since the 2016 vintage a neighbouring grower, Domaine Mersiol, has added grapes from the same granite soils of Dambach. Wines are made in a wooden winery built in 2010 with no air conditioning, and the old village cellar is still used for long ageing. Look out for the Riesling Granite, Pinot Blanc Eclectic, Pinot Gris Symbiose, Pinot Noir Harmonie and Crémant Extra Brut.
