Bourgogne 'Les Riaux' 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Domaine Derain, in the Burgundy region in France. This red wine is made with Pinot Noir grapes, with vines located on the plains of the commune of Corpeaux. They were planted in the late 1980s on silty clay soil with iron oxides. These vines have always been farmed without chemicals.
This wine is vibrant, earthy, energetic and scrumptious from start to finish. Expectional price/value ratio and one you really should try!
Vinification and aging: 70% destemmed, in conical wooden vats, without temperature control. 20 days of vatting, punching down the cap for 1 hour per day during the second part of the vatting. Direct pressing and alcoholic fermentation in barrels.10 months of aging and bottling.
Julien Altaber now runs the domaine with his wife and partner Carole Schwab, and interestingly founder Dominique Derain is also never too far away, still involved in the cellar tastings, even waxing the bottles when not travelling to other vineyards across the world in retirement. Julien Altaber and Carole also run the winery Sextant from the same cellar. This began as a side project for Julien when he was the right hand man for Dominque Derain over many years before taking over the estate. Now both are run side by side.
