NATURAL WINES BY ESCHENHOF HOLZER
Eschenhof Holzer is a family estate in Großriedenthal in the Wagram, a region where very few growers make natural wine. Arnold Holzer is the fifth generation. He took over in 2010 at 23 and began moving the 16 hectares towards low-intervention winemaking in 2017. The vines grow on deep loess laid down in the last ice age, planted mainly to Grüner Veltliner, Roter Veltliner, Zweigelt and Müller-Thurgau.
Most wines ferment spontaneously in stainless steel. Prices are fair, which makes this a good first stop if you are new to natural wine. Invader is skin-contact Müller-Thurgau with only a small dose of sulphur at bottling, and The Natural Orange comes in a practical litre bottle. The RAW white, rosé and pét-nat come in half-litre bottles, handy for one or two people.
