Sulle Bucce 2024 is a natural wine crafted by Controcorrente, on Mount Etna in the Sicily region in Italy. This light white / soft orange wine is made with 40% Carricante, 40% Catarratto, 10% Grillo and 10% Trebbiano grapes.

The grapes are hand-harvested on the volcanic soils of Mount Etna at the end of September, then destemmed and crushed. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in neutral epoxy tanks, with different skin-contact times depending on the grape: 2 days for Carricante, 5 days for Catarratto and 10 days for the remaining varieties. The wine is pressed at the end of fermentation. A small amount of SO₂ is added before bottling.

We have not yet tried this wine, which seems inbetween a white and a light orange, but we hear it is a textured volcanic wine with citrus, yellow fruit and subtle herbal notes. Fresh and savoury, with bright acidity, gentle grip and a salty mineral finish.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

Controcorrente

Controcorrente is Antonino 'Nino' Calì's small wine project on family land near Linguaglossa, on Mount Etna. The name translates as 'against the current', reflecting Nino's independent way of working. Rather than applying one rigid method across every cuvée, he responds to the fruit and the direction of each wine, allowing the range to move freely between different styles.

The vineyards sit at roughly 550 metres above sea level on sandy volcanic soils. Nino works with Etna's principal grapes, including Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio, Carricante and Catarratto, while Grillo and Trebbiano also appear. From these varieties he makes sparkling rosé, skin-contact whites and reds ranging from light and immediate to more structured.
