NATURAL WINES BY PETR MARADA
Petr Marada makes wine in Mikulčice, near Hodonín in southern Moravia. He founded the winery in 2006, carrying on a family farming tradition, and works around 20 hectares spread over four very different sites. They run from calcium-rich loess at Kukvička in Josefov to sand laced with grey volcanic tuff at Na Strání in Lužice, where autumn mists bring noble rot.
He is best known for his bright, almost neon skin-contact wines in clear bottles, but there is a lot more going on. Since 2013 he has made serious bottle-fermented Sekts, inspired by his love of Champagne, like the Mr. Pinot Extra Brut. Whites are clean single-grape wines from steel tanks, some in oak or acacia. Reds ferment in wooden barrels and have a depth you rarely get this far north. Sulphur is a small dose at bottling. Start with the Gewürztraminer Orange.
