El Regresso: Forgotten Grapes
Based in Manchuela, the project of El Regreso gives particular attention to grapes that are rarely seen in modern Spanish wine. Julián works with Marisancho, Tardana, Royal, Jacivera and Moravia Agria among others, treating these local varieties as individual voices and giving them space to show their different personalities and connection to the region.
His cellar decisions are deliberately measured. Fermentations begin with native yeasts, with unnecessary additions or adjustments avoided, most of the wines are made without added sulphites (SO2). Stainless steel, concrete, amphorae and older wooden barrels all have a place, but the vessel changes according to the wine so that maturation supports the grape rather than dominating it. El Regreso brings together Julián's international experience and knowledge rooted in his grandfather's vineyards. The wines are lively, delicate and expressive, presenting a current interpretation of Manchuela while placing its overlooked local varieties firmly at the centre. This focus is especially important for grapes that many drinkers may be encountering for the first time, and gives the project a clear regional purpose beyond simply producing another set of Spanish wines.
