Volcanic Wines From.... Germany?!?
Its impressive to note the importance of this volcanic region of Kaiserstuhl in Baden, as this is really not assumed in the country. The Kaiserstuhl is a small, low mountain range of hills rising out of the Upper Rhine Plain that was formed by a stratovolcano roughly 16 million years ago, of which the Raspini vines are grown.
Spontaneous fermentation and patient maturation form the basis of their cellar work. Older barrels are used for ageing so that wood remains subtle, while gravity helps move the wine gently where possible. Stylistic corrections and unnecessary additions are avoided, giving small differences between sites and vintages room to remain visible.
The finished wines are dry, precise and textural, with Pinot Blanc forming the backbone of the range. Raspini brings Roberto's Sicilian background together with the volcanic landscape of the Kaiserstuhl, resulting in a highly personal project shaped by tiny scale and close attention from vine to bottle.
