NATURAL WINES BY IBERIELI
Iberieli is Zurab Topuridze's family winery, with vineyards in Guria, the humid subtropical west of Georgia, and in Kakheti in the drier east. The Kakheti plots cover about 5.5 hectares of sandy clay loam and river stones at around 480 metres, while the Guria vines grow at about 300 metres on clay loam. Zurab's children chose the name, after the ancient Iberians of the Caucasus, early winemakers credited with the qvevri. Zurab also co-founded Georgia's Natural Wine Association.
Everything is fermented and aged in qvevri. The western wines are made the Gurian way, without stems and with only partial skin contact, and across the range the wines are lighter than many Georgian bottles. From Guria come rare grapes like Chkhaveri, Tetri Kamuri and Tsolikouri. From Kakheti, look out for Saperavi, Cecilia, Kisi, Khikhvi, Golden Blend with seven months on the skins, and the rare Mtsvivani Kakhuri and pink-skinned Vardisperi Rkatsiteli.
