NATURAL WINES BY MENDALL
Mendall is Laureano Serres, from El Pinell de Brai in the Terra Alta, south-west of Tarragona. A former software developer in Madrid, he came home in 1996 and bottled his first Mendall wines from the 1999 harvest, making him a pioneer of natural wine in Catalonia. He farms around five and a half hectares of limestone with little topsoil, some above 500 metres. His daughter Alícia now works alongside him.
He has used no added sulphur since the early 2000s, after forgetting it one year and liking the result. Whites from Macabeu and Garnatxa Blanca ferment for a long time, reds spend little time in vats, and cuvées change a lot from year to year, often with some volatile acidity. He co-founded the Brutal!!! label with Joan Ramon Escoda, Remi Poujol and Anthony Tortul. Look out for Terme de Guiu, Abeurador, Dos Tires and Barrica de Thierry.
