Who Is Behind Momento Mori?

Momento Mori is Dane and Hannah Johns, working in Victoria, Australia. Dane came to wine sideways: he was an electronic musician and a barista before learning the craft alongside Australian natural wine names Adam Marks and Bill Downie, and a stint in the Jura left its mark on everything he makes.

The first Momento Mori wine was Staring at the Sun, released in 2015. Dane says he started making wine on a quest to make wines exactly like that one, and a decade later it has a cult following in Australia and well beyond.

Home is Nikau Farm, a property of around 38 hectares in the Baw Baw area of Gippsland, on ranges known to the Traditional Owners as Tolone. The family farms two small blocks there, each about three quarters of a hectare and around 35 years old: the Nikau block of Pinot Noir across several clones on their own roots, and the Tolone block of Riesling with a little Chardonnay. Everything is worked largely by hand, and no herbicides or synthetic inputs have ever been used.

For most of the Momento Mori range, Dane buys fruit from growers he trusts across Victoria, above all the Chalmers family's vineyards on the slopes of Mt Camel in Heathcote.

Staring at the Sun is the closest thing Momento Mori has to a flagship: a skin-contact blend of Vermentino, Fiano and Moscato Giallo, with the proportions adjusted each year to suit the vintage. Fistful of Flowers is Moscato Giallo and Vermentino on skins, priced deliberately low because Dane wanted an entry-level bottle people can actually afford. In his words: "Wine for the people!"

Etc Etc is Schioppettino with Syrah, and was born from Dane falling for Jura Ploussard: an everyday wine with complexity, freshness and a touch of wildness. Nazomi is a drinkable rosé-style blend of Schioppettino and Syrah with a splash of Vermentino, and Everything is Free is the light red Dane likes to drink most, mostly Nero d'Avola with a little Moscato Giallo.

The Incline is built on Syrah, made as a homage to Dane's Nan, who grew up in a remote coal-mining settlement in New Zealand. True Love Waits is a label he keeps only for exceptional wines, back for 2022 with Sangiovese, Nero d'Avola, Syrah and Lambrusco. If Only Maybe is built on Nosiola from three rows at Mt Camel, a grape that is very hard to find in Australia.

Then there are the small-batch bottles: Amphora Grillo, an Amphora blend of Ribolla Gialla and Fiano (around 600 bottles), Bianco from Fiano and Vermentino raised in terracotta, and the two Nikau Farm wines, Nikau Pinot Noir and Nikau 'Tolone' from the home blocks. Cuvées come and go and blends shift with each vintage, so check the list below for what we have right now.

How Momento Mori Wines Are Made

Most of the fruit comes from Mt Camel in Heathcote, on rocky volcanic ironstone and dolerite. Syrah also comes from the Goulburn River. At Nikau Farm the vines grow in compacted sandstone from ancient seabeds under a layer of loam.

Dane's grapes lean heavily Italian: Fiano, Vermentino, Moscato Giallo, Nosiola, Schioppettino, Nero d'Avola, Grillo and Ribolla Gialla, alongside Syrah, Pinot Noir and Riesling.

In the cellar each grape is usually fermented separately, in stainless steel, ceramic eggs and amphora, with wild yeasts. Whites often get time on their skins, and reds are often made with whole-bunch or semi-carbonic ferments for a lighter, fresher style. The wines are handled gently and bottled by hand.

On sulphur: most Momento Mori wines go into bottle with no added sulphur, but not all of them. Where Dane decides a wine needs it, he adds a very small amount at bottling; the Nikau Pinot Noir 2024, for example, got 10ppm. Each product page says what we know for that bottle.

MOST WINE CLUBS ARE SHIT.

They give you crap wines that are often their stock not selling and have nothing to do with your wine style. We're gonna change that.

NATURAL WINES FROM GIPPSLAND

Gippsland is a large, cool-climate region in eastern Victoria, running from the mountains east of Melbourne down to the coast. Cool nights and long ripening seasons suit Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and small farms work steep, hilly blocks largely by hand. Natural wine producers include Momento Mori and Nikau Farm.
