One grower, one parcel of 2.5 hectares

Dominique Moreau started Marie Courtin in the early 2000s, with the first wines released in 2005. The name is her grandmother's.

What makes the estate unusual is how small and how singular it is. Everything comes off one parcel of 2.5 hectares in Polisot, in the Côte des Bar. There is no blending across villages, no reserve wine from other sites, and no second estate elsewhere to fall back on in a difficult year.

The parcel is mostly Pinot Noir with small plots of Chardonnay, on Kimmeridgian chalky clay marl. That is the same band of soil that runs down into Chablis, and it is the reason Côte des Bar Champagne tastes the way it does.

She has farmed it without chemical treatments since the beginning. Her partner is Roland Piollot of Champagne Piollot, in the same village. The two estates are run entirely separately, with their own vines and their own wines.

Production is around 15,000 bottles a year across the whole range, and most of it leaves France.

Resonance, Concordance and Le Blanc du Tremble

Because the ground never changes, the cuvées are separated by grape, by vintage and by what happens in the cellar. Each one is a single year. There is no non-vintage house blend.

Resonance is the one to start with, a blanc de noirs from pure Pinot Noir off that parcel, bottled Extra Brut. It is the most direct statement of what the site does.

Concordance is the bottle people seek her out for. It is Pinot Noir again, but made with no sulphur added at any point, which is genuinely rare in Champagne, where the second fermentation and disgorgement both tempt a grower to reach for it. Ours is the 2019. It is bottled with no dosage.

Le Blanc du Tremble is the third we have in. It is a smaller release and much less written about than the others.

The wider range includes Eloquence, the blanc de blancs from her Chardonnay plots, Efflorescence, a blanc de noirs given long ageing, and two macerated roses, Indulgence and Allegeance. What is available changes year to year, because a single small parcel only makes so much.

Native yeast, no chaptalisation, and dosage close to nothing

The cellar work is deliberately plain, because with one parcel and one vintage in the bottle there is nothing else carrying the wine. Fermentation runs on the vineyard's own yeasts. Nothing is chaptalised, so the alcohol is whatever the year gave her.

Dosage is low across the range and zero on several cuvées, Concordance included. The wines sit a long time on their lees before disgorgement.

Sulphur is where she draws the clearest line, and it is worth being precise about it rather than lumping the range together. Concordance is the no-sulphur bottling; it is made and finished without any added. The other cuvées are not sold on that basis, and a small amount is normal at bottling in Champagne. If you specifically want the zero-sulphur one, Concordance is the bottle.

MOST WINE CLUBS ARE SHIT.

They give you crap wines that are often their stock not selling and have nothing to do with your wine style. We're gonna change that.
We've created a club with three tiers, that is actually curated and ideal for the type of wine drinker your are.

NATURAL WINES FROM CHAMPAGNE

Champagne is the coldest of the classic French wine regions, about 150 kilometres east of Paris, on chalk deep enough that the cellars are cut straight into it. The grapes are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, with a handful of growers keeping Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris alive. What matters for natural wine is the split between the big houses, who buy most of their fruit, and the grower Champagnes who farm their own and bottle it themselves. The growers are where the low dosage and low sulphur bottles come from, and where a single village actually tastes like itself. Producers include Mouzon Leroux Champagne, Champagne Piollot and Moussé Fils.

FAQ about Marie Courtin Champagne

Who is Marie Courtin?

Marie Courtin was Dominique Moreau's grandmother. The estate is named after her. The wines are made by Dominique Moreau herself at Polisot in the Côte des Bar.

Where do Marie Courtin's grapes come from?

From a single parcel of 2.5 hectares in Polisot, in the Côte des Bar. Every cuvée in the range comes off that same ground, on Kimmeridgian chalky clay marl, which is the same soil band that continues south into Chablis.

Does Marie Courtin Champagne contain sulphites?

Concordance is made with no sulphur added at any stage, which is rare in Champagne. The other cuvées are not sold as zero-sulphur wines and will carry a small amount, as is normal at bottling. If you want the no-sulphur bottle specifically, it is Concordance.

What grapes does Marie Courtin use?

Mostly Pinot Noir, with small plots of Chardonnay on the same parcel. Resonance and Concordance are both pure Pinot Noir. Eloquence, which we do not currently have in, is the Chardonnay blanc de blancs.

Is every Marie Courtin a vintage Champagne?

Yes. Each cuvée is made from one harvest rather than blended across years, so there is no non-vintage house style. That is unusual in Champagne and it is central to how she works.

How much Marie Courtin is made?

Around 15,000 bottles a year across the entire range, from the one parcel. Individual cuvées are therefore small, and which ones are available changes from vintage to vintage.

Which Marie Courtin should I buy first?

Resonance. It is pure Pinot Noir off the parcel with nothing unusual done to it, so it shows the site most clearly. Concordance is the one to move to next if the no-sulphur question is what interests you.
