We've always been BIG FANS of Martin Wörner's aka Marto Wines 'Weiss' 2022, wine since it's first vintage in 2016 (which we're lucky to still have a bottle of in our personal fridge!)
This is actually THE wine which converted us to ONLY drink natural wine. For us, it truly hit home that there was no way any conventional wine could ever taste like this, and so we realised we would only drink natural wine from that day on. Now we have a wine shop, so it worked out well!
How does Marto 'Weiss 2022' taste?
Year after year, this popular German orange wine simply called Marto Weiss 2022 is super tropical in it's incredible flavour profile, which features big notes of pineapple, apricot, lime, mango and passionfuit. This Marto wine made in his base in Flonheim in Rheinhessen is very light usually around 10% alcohol, so ideal for poolside sips in the sun, or lazy park days.
What grapes are in Marto Weiss 2022?
Marto Weiss features a big mix of mostly fruity and aromatic grapes, which include Scheurebe, Muskateller, Bacchus, Faber, Riesling & Silvaner. This wine is tropical and fruit forward, with an easy going mouthfeel! Its made with some skin-contact and is orange, but with elements of a white wine too.
This was the first ever Marto wine, and are the grapes he inherited with the winery. As awesome as this fruit forward, glou glou wines is, his newer style which will soon be revealed is much more of an elegant style, with longer elevage times and precision in the vinification and patience to allow the wine to age perfectly before release. Many of the newer wines to come are harvested from newer vineyards, on more impressive Terroir.
Is Martin Wörner the future of natural wine in Rheinhessen?
In our opinion, yes! He (working alongside his partner Alanna Lagamba, of Vin de Lagamba) has the ability to make quaffable tropical whites like this, electric red white blends like Manna and now more refined, well aged wines which showcase his ability to change his style. To quote Martin Wörner when we recently visited him "I'm evolving every day... every single day I better myself. Thats what its about..."
