Aldo Viola 'Brutto' is a Pet Nat with low alcohol and a refreshing mouthfeel.

As Aldo Viola himself states as he opened one with us at 10am, its perfect for breakfast... hehe

Really great Pet Nat, made from Catterrato and bursting with freshness!

Production details of Brutto Pet Nat: Brutto is a Catarratto Pet Nat from Aldo Viola, a fourth-generation natural winemaker in Alcamo, western Sicily. The Catarratto grows on the area's steep "Timpi Rossi" (Red Hills) on iron-rich sandy-clayey soils. Wild ferment, then macerates on its skins for 8 to 9 months. Crown-capped towards the end of initial fermentation for a second ferment in bottle. No additions whatsoever, no removal of lees, no added sulphur.

Tasting Notes: We have not yet tried this vintage of Brutto Pet Nat by Aldo Viola, but we hear it has notes of apricot, peach, honeysuckle, lemon, melon and toasty brioche with a flinty mineral lift.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

NATURAL WINES BY ALDO VIOLA

Aldo Viola works near Alcamo in western Sicily, not far from Palermo, with yellow flowers and cover crops growing between the vines. He played football professionally before coming back to wine, studied oenology in Marsala and was the first oenologist at Centopassi, the cooperative that farms land confiscated from the mafia. Catarratto, Grillo and Grecanico grow on the steep, iron-rich Timpi Rossi, the red hills. His Syrah grows 30 km away at 350 metres. His brother Alessandro makes wine on the other side of town on different soils, and the styles are very different.

Aldo's wines are structured, raw and fairly classic. The whites spend months on their skins, and sulphur goes in only when needed, never more than 20 mg/l in total. Brutto is Catarratto, crown-capped before the wild ferment finishes. We love the Plus Syrah with a steak, and the Brutto pét-nat for something easier.
