An orange wine? You might have heard the phrase before but weren't quite sure what it means or you absolutely love the different nuances of orange wine already. An orange wine is basically a white wine that is fermented on the skins, which gives it a tannic structure and the more orange colour.
Whether or not you already are familiar with Orange Wines, these wines will absolutely knock your socks off, as they are, in our humble opinion, simply great!
Roca Viva - Las Cañas 2021
This wine is an excellent showcase for the Muscat of Alexandria grape, also known in Italy as Zibibbo. It's of course got that aromatic quality you look for in the grape, but it goes deeper with a mineralic edge making it quite gastronomic, especially with its mild grippy structure, tingly energy and depth. It's nice to see an expression of this grape which is not overly floral and more terroir-driven.
Expect notes of salted apricots, herbs like thyme, clementine peel, white pepper, mild savoury elements such as cheese rind (in a very nice way), green tea, aniseed. Very good. Decant for best results and serve in a decent glass.
Strekov 1075 - Śupkáč
Śupkáč 2022 aka Supkac by Strekov 1075 is made in the Nitra region of Slovakia, with 100% Welschriesling grapes, which undergo skin-contact fermentation..
Fun, fresh and unique in its Welschriesling flavour profile! Tastes like peach sorbet, vanilla and rose petals with tropical kick! Super smooth. Super delicious!
Patrick Bouju & Justine Loiseau - G&M 2022
G&M 2022 by Patrick Bouju & Justine Loiseau of Domaine la Boheme is a light orange wine, vinified in Auvergne but with grapes sourced elsewhere.
This blend changes year to year, with this 2022 featuring 30% Muscat d’Alexandrie (Zibibbo) from the south of France, 20% Gewürztraminer, 30% Chardonnay muscaté from auvergne and the rest us a mix of Grenache blanc and Grenache Gris, Ugni Blanc
This wine is beautiful! Aromatic, clean, interesting and tropical. Expect JUICY notes of peppermint, physalis, papaya, honeymelon, angostura bitters and much more. SUCH A DELIGHT. Highly recommended!
Dluhe Grefty - Alba Rosales
Alba Rosales is a natural wine crafted by Dluhe Grefty, in the Moravia region in Czech Republic. This DELICIOUS orange wine is made with 100% Gewürztraminer grapes aged for 14 days on the skins, allowing this special wine to give off a wonderful herbal approach alongside fine tannins and delightful stone fruit elements. Peachy yet complex. A banger!
Meinklang - Weißer Mulatschak
We really like the Weisser Mulatschak 2023 by Meinklang as its a SERIOUSLY impressive orange wine for the incredible low price point.
Delicious blend of Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) and Welschriesling. Weißer Mulatschak is an easy going skin contact wine with that unique, aromatic twang of Gewürztraminer, but less intense than a full-on Gewürztraminer wine. Peachy, strawberry yogurt and clementine fruit elements make this a real winner!
