NATURAL WINES BY MAS DE LIBIAN
Mas de Libian is in Saint-Marcel-d'Ardèche, on the right bank of the Rhône. The Thibon family has farmed here since 1670, and wine became the focus in 1970 when Jean-Pierre Thibon built the cellar. The vines grow on old Rhône terraces covered in rounded pebbles, much like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, over clay and limestone. The estate has been certified holistic since 2005, and two Comtois horses, Nestor and Bambi, plough the rows.
Grenache is the main red grape, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and a few rows of Counoise and Vaccarèse, while the white grapes are Clairette, Roussanne and Viognier. Fermentations use native yeasts and a small dose of sulphur goes in at bottling. Ageing depends on the cuvée, from concrete and large oak casks to stoneware and porcelain jars. 'Calade' Côtes du Rhône is mostly Mourvèdre from the stoniest terraces. Vin de Pétanque is their light, easy red from concrete.
