NATURAL WINES BY THOMAS PUÉCHAVY
Thomas Puéchavy grew up in Paris and plays harmonica in the band Moriarty. He studied viticulture in Amboise in 2016 and made his first vintage in 2019. He makes about 8,000 bottles a year from 3 hectares of rented vines in Vouvray in the Loire, mostly Chenin Blanc on limestone, with Huet and Foreau as neighbours. The vines are 20 to 80 years old.
His cellar is a century-old tuffeau cave at Nazelles-Négron, a few hundred metres outside the appellation, so the wines are labelled Vin de France, which he is happy about. He ferments with wild yeasts in steel, fibreglass and barrels, and aims for no added sulphur, adding a little only when needed. Les Vrilles comes from younger vines in steel, Le Rayon spends over a year in barrel and Les Turbulents is the pét-nat. Dry, off-dry and pét-nat Chenin, all very well made.
