NATURAL WINES BY SUMENJAK
Šumenjak is a family farm in Jakobski Dol, in Slovenian Styria, about 17 km north of Maribor. Srečko Šumenjak runs it with wine as the main work, but the family also keep around 60 bee colonies, a trade now in its fourth generation, plus Angus cattle and a still for grape brandy. Out of 25 hectares, nine are vines, spread over the Počenik, Hlapje and Polički vrh sites on marl soils.
Yields are kept low, picking is by hand, and fermentations are left to run their own course rather than steered. The wines then age in old oak, and the reds such as the Pinot Noir are bottled with no added sulphur. There are two label lines: a scarecrow for the fresher wines and birds for the bolder ones. We stock the Alter Cuvée 2021, one of two Šumenjak wines given Maribor's 'Our Best' local quality mark.
