NATURAL WINES BY DOMAINE DES GROTTES
Domaine des Grottes is a Beaujolais estate known for juicy Gamay, and for something more unusual: two of the best alcohol-free drinks we know! Romain des Grottes took over part of his grandfather's vineyards at Château de Lacarelle, south of Brouilly, in 2001. He pulled out many rows and grows cereals, vegetables and herbs among the vines. The Gamay is around 40 years old, on granite.
Antidote is Gamay juice blended with herbs picked on the property, and Antilope is its white sister; both are incredible. One thing to check for sure: their experimental Gamays, which sometimes have herbal infusions or fruit like raspberry. The wines get short semi-carbonic macerations with nothing added, not even sulphur. Our favourite wine from winemaker Romain is the Amphore Gamay, with a super light maceration and an incredible flavour profile. It ages in three Georgian amphorae and one Spanish tinaja.
