Vesely Orange 2019 is a natural wine crafted by Richard Stavek, in the Moravia region in Czech Republic. Vines here are 50 years old. This wine has no added sulphur.

The importer tells us that Veselý is perhaps the most typical wine for Richard Stávek. It has a magnificent intense orange colour. In the glass it smells of lots of herbs, preserved apricots and freshly grated lemon peel. In the mouth, thanks to the skin contact, there's a great, fine friction and more pull than you might expect given the color.

The wine has an impressive length and depth - a miles away from the generic glouglou orange wines that are happily pounded through bars these days.

This orange wine is made with Grüner Veltliner, Malvasia, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger, Pinot Blanc, Traminer and Welschriesling grapes.

Richard Stávek is one of the early pioneers of making natural wine in the Czech Republic, and started in the early 90's in the most common region for making wine, Moravia.

He is not just a winemaker, but runs a farm with sheep of which he also makes cheese from amongst other things. He farms 4.5 Hectares of wines with vines on average around 50 years old, on sandy soils.

His wines can be experimentals, and usually featuring little known Czech Varietals too…

WHAT IS ORANGE WINE?

Orange wines are actually white wines, but with a different winemaking process - they’re made by fermenting the juice with the grape skins, which is mostly done with red wines, not white. This extra step adds tannins, flavor, and a unique color to the wine.
Because of the skin contact, orange wines tend to have more herbal, aromatic notes, and they can also have a bit of bitterness depending on the grape, how long the skins are left in contact with the juice, and the vessel used for maturation. Unlike most white wines, they can also feature tannins (which are formed from the skins, which white wines do not use). Orange wines are a style that brings out some really interesting flavors that many people adore for their unique properties, whether easy going or complex.
