Meinklang farm is an impressive, very large chemical-free & holistic natural wine estate from Burgenland in Austria. Headed by Angelina and Werner Michlits, what's unusual about Meinklang is how they can achieve such quality natural wines on a much larger scale than many can achieve. Perhaps the largest natural wine producer we are aware of, they also make wines which would be considered not natural, as well as running an impressive cattle farm and lots of grains (with which they make beer and feed their animals... in addition to making bread). They really do it all!
Located along Lake Neusiedl on the border of Hungary (with vineyards on both sides), the estate grows typical Austrian varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Grauburgunder, Blaufränkisch and Saint Laurent, as well as Hárslevelü and Juhfark on the Hungarian side. The Michlits really believe in the full circle of life within the vineyards, encouraging biodiversity with the cattle and sheep that fertilise the vines, grains, fruits and vegetables that are also grown there. And, of course, they use spontaneous fermentation, avoid fining, and use little-to-no sulphur.
In this box you'll find these five wines:
Foam Vulkan
This crisp fizz is refreshing, acidic, and a little sour too - in the best way possible! Notes of zippy green, apples, cucumber, limes and pear - this is IDEAL if you crave fresh acidity in the heat!
Weißer Mulatschak
We really like the Weisser Mulatschak 2023 by Meinklang as its a SERIOUSLY impressive orange wine for the incredible low price point.
Delicious blend of Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder) and Welschriesling. Weißer Mulatschak is an easy going skin contact wine with that unique, aromatic twang of Gewürztraminer, but less intense than a full-on Gewürztraminer wine. Peachy, strawberry yogurt and clementine fruit elements make this a real winner!
Graupert Grauburgunder
This vineyard of the same Graupert name is unpruned and untamed, meaning the vines find their own balance. Meinklang say that "Graupert proudly rises from the wilderness of its pruning-free vineyard. The mash-fermented Pinot Gris impresses with a variety of aromas and density and pure enjoyment. The wine walks the tightrope between impetuous rusticity and graceful grace."
We adored the vibrancy of this orange wine, which gave off lovely notes of stewed rhubarb, candied ginger, orange zest, herbs and apricot. A real treat!
Epic
This sparkling wine is made with Welschriesling, Muscat and Grüner Veltliner grapes., and is actually not a Pet Nat, but a sparkling wine made with the Charmont method, often found in Champagne. This method pushes carbonated gas into the still wine, making it bubbly. This is cheaper and less risky than making a pet nat.
Flavourwise this is a real treat for the low price! Aromatic elements mingling with vanilla, melon and floral touches. Pretty unbeatable for the price!
Roter Mulatschak
This wine is juicy, fruity and with some soul for its very fair price - but it remains easy drinking. Roter Mulatschak is a blend of Sankt Laurent and Zweigelt.
This wine is incredible value for money! Peppery Sankt Laurent mixed with freshness of Zweigelt. Blackcurrant and herbal notes form the basis but this is actually more complex than expected for the price!
