The serious 14.5% red from Mas d’Intras features a generous blend of 55% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 10% Carignan taken from vines that are 45 years old, grown in the rich soils of Ardèche’s Valvignères plateau.
Ferdinand comes from some of the oldest vines on the domaine, 45-year-old Syrah, Carignan and Grenache that have had decades to push roots deep into the volcanic Ardèche soil. After fermentation, the wine spends 10 months in a combination of tank and old barrel, giving structure without excessive oak influence.
Expect kicks of jammy ripe dark fruit like black cherry & stewed plum, with the characteristic Ardèche signature of olive and black pepper threading through. The Grenache adds roundness; the old-vine Syrah gives it length and mineral backbone. There is a seriousness here that rewards a proper glass and something substantial on the table.
Decant for 20 minutes if opening young. Would be excellent with lamb, duck, slow-roasted pork, or a generous cheese board.
