Riesling
Riesling is a highly esteemed white wine grape that is known for its exceptional quality and versatility. It is primarily grown in Germany, particularly in the regions of Mosel, Rheingau, and Pfalz, where it thrives in the cool climate and slate-rich soils. Riesling is also produced in other countries such as Austria, France (Alsace), and the United States (particularly in Washington and New York).
One of the most remarkable aspects of Riesling is its ability to express a wide range of flavors, from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. It is known for its vibrant acidity, which gives it a refreshing and lively character. Riesling wines often exhibit aromas of citrus fruits, green apple, peach, and floral notes, with some examples showcasing petrol (more common in aged Riesling) or mineral undertones.
The grape's natural acidity and balance make it an excellent candidate for aging, with some Riesling wines developing complex flavors and honeyed characteristics over time. Its versatility allows it to be paired with a variety of dishes, from spicy Asian cuisine to rich seafood and even desserts.
Natural Wine producers known for producing exceptional Riesling include Pierre Frick, Staffelter Hof, Rudolf Trossen, Moritz Kissinger, Dominik Held and Patrick Meyer.
