You may not have heard of Mtsvivani Kakhuri. That’s not a failing on your part - this grape nearly disappeared entirely. Once widely grown throughout Kakheti in eastern Georgia, it suffered the double blow of Phylloxera in the late 19th century and Soviet-era standardisation policies that prized high yields over variety. Iberieli’s Zurab Topuridze is one of a handful of producers bringing it back.
What is Mtsvivani — and why does it matter?Iberieli is a family winery with vineyards in both Kakheti (east Georgia) and Guria (west Georgia) - named after the ancient Iberian peoples of the Caucasus who were making wine in buried clay vessels thousands of years before the concept of appellation existed. Everything is fermented and aged in traditional qvevri.
The name ‘Mtsvivani’ means ‘falling’ in Georgian — a nod to the variety’s reputation for easily dropping from the vine at peak ripeness. While most surviving examples are made as skin-contact amber wines, this version shows what the variety can do in an era of careful, committed viticulture.
This wine presents itself with an exceptionally inviting and citrusy style. On the nose, aromas of lime and grapefruit unfold elegantly, instantly invigorating the senses. On the palate, the wine is straightforward and fresh, perfect for a sunny day. The delicate acidity blends harmoniously, providing a refreshing lightness that makes every sip a pleasure.
This combination of freshness and elegance makes the wine an ideal accompaniment to light dishes or simply for enjoying on a balmy evening. A truly refreshing experience!
Serve at cellar temperature, not cold. Brilliant with mezze, soft cheese, grilled vegetables, or anything that rewards a wine with genuine subtlety.
