NATURAL WINES BY MICHI LORENZ
Michi Lorenz farms 16 hectares of steep vineyards in Kitzeck im Sausal in southern Styria, on schist and slate soils. The slopes sit at around 620 metres, on a mix of grey, black and red schist, and all the work is done by hand. Alongside the winery the family runs a Buschenschank, a traditional Styrian wine tavern. He is one of the most exciting young names in Austria.
With very little added sulphur, that minerality really comes through, giving precise, energetic wines. Ferments are wild and most whites get a few days on their skins. Halo is Sauvignon Blanc with four days of skin contact and 13 months in new oak, bottled with about 12 mg/l of added sulphur. Schist Happens is Sauvignon Blanc from steel and oak, Supernova is a skin-contact Chardonnay, and Revoluzza is Welschriesling with ten days on the skins. Try Supernova, Halo or Schist Happens.
