Barbera d’Asti superiore ”La Tranquilla” 2019 by Carusin is a natural wine made in Piedmont with Barbera grapes.

Production details of La Tranquilla: La Tranquilla is a single-vineyard Barbera d'Asti Superiore from Carussin, sourced from old vines planted in 1978 in calcareous soil at San Marzano Oliveto. The vineyard is Guyot-trained and farmed using a lunar-calendar approach without synthetic chemistry. The grapes are hand-selected, lightly pressed, then ferment under controlled temperature with long maceration on the skins. The wine ages in large wooden barrels.

Tasting Notes: We have not yet tried this vintage of La Tranquilla by Carussin, but we hear it has notes of vanilla, sour cherry, plum, raspberry and dark fruit.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

NATURAL WINES BY CARUSSIN

Carussin is the family of Luigi Garberoglio, Bruna Ferro and their sons Luca and Matteo in San Marzano Oliveto, in Asti, Piedmont. Bruna's grandfather Ferro Maggiore started the farm in 1927 with four hectares. He came from Calosso, and Carussin is dialect for someone from Calosso. The vines sit at 350 to 400 metres on limestone and clay, and the family stopped using chemicals in 1984.

As well as wine they brew beer and raise donkeys, which you will spot on some of the labels. Barbera is the main grape, with some Moscato, and the range goes from easy Asinoi and Completo, including big boxes, to serious Barbera d'Asti like La Tranquilla, from a single vineyard on limestone. Wild yeasts ferment in steel and concrete, and free sulphur stays under 30 mg per litre. Filari Corti means short rows, a joke, as the rows run about 200 metres.
