Black Betty 2021

Black Betty 2021 by 2Naturkinder is a natural wine made in Franken with Domina and Dornfelder grapes.

2Naturkinder farm 7 hectares, and besides their Vater & Sonn Cuvee, have no added sulphur added to their wines. The married couple behind 2Naturkinder feature a lot of bats on their labels, as they actually use bat dung from a nearby Bat Colony to fertilise their soil.

Production details of Black Betty: Black Betty is made by 2Naturkinder in Franken, Germany, run by Melanie and Michael. The wine is named after the first lamb born in their Domina vineyard. Domina, Regent and a small portion of Spätburgunder grow on shell limestone soils in Kitzingen, Sulzfeld and Volkach. They farm with a lunar-calendar approach and use bat dung from a nearby colony to fertilise the soil (which is why bats appear on many of their labels). The Regent is pressed directly and poured over Domina bunches for a touch of colour and tannin, then ages in big oak barrels before being blended with Spätburgunder aged in stainless steel.

Tasting Notes: We have not yet tried this vintage of Black Betty by 2Naturkinder, but we hear it has notes of tart cranberry, Swedish berries, bay leaf, woody herbs and a chalky cliff-face minerality.
