Interesting, charming and complex wine from Schmitt which we highly recommend.

This is an interesting wine for Germany... as Kékfrankos is the Hungarian name for Blaufränkisch, where the grape originates from, but has perhaps gained more recognition from Austrian producers on the world stage, where it‘s big fruit bursts can really come into full effect with natural wine producers.

As Bianka and Daniel Schmitt live and farm in Rheinhessen, Germany even having this grape is unusual and their terroir brings a different element to those familiar with the grape from Austria and Hungary.

There is some fantastic complexity going on here for the wonderful pricepoint of just under 20€, with hints of spice and vanilla are nestled amongst a bramble berry fruit mouthfeel, with minerally bursts. On the medium-length finish, mild tingly tannins dance with a pleasant bitterness that leads you onto another sip.

It’s a serious, medium bodied wine but it’s also very approachable like a light red.

Very, very nice and would work fantastically with most main courses, but especially meat and tomato based pasta style dishes.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.
