NATURAL WINES BY NIKOLAS JURETIC
Nikolas Juretic farms his family's old vineyards around Cormons, in the Collio hills of Friuli on the Slovenian border. After oenology studies and work with the vine-pruning specialists Simonit & Sirch, he started bottling the family's grapes himself in 2018. The main plots are the Montona, Pradis and Bosc di Sot crus, with vines over 50 years old, some from 1910, on ponca: sandstone and marl, rich in limestone and fossils.
Grapes are picked by hand and fermented whole with wild yeasts. Toc di Montone is Tocai Friulano with brief skin contact, a light orange that drinks like a fresh white. Grande Waldo blends Malvasia Istriana, Ribolla Gialla and Friulano from the oldest vines, with three to six days on skins and about 11 months in old oak. Sulphur is minimal. From 2023 the wines are called Mont and Waldo. Nikolas paints the labels himself.
