Saperavi 2024 is a natural wine crafted by Gelovani Cellar, in the Kakheti region in Georgia. This off dry/ semi-sweet red wine is made with the local Saperavi grapes, which spend 6 days in contact with the skins. Expect dark forest fruit - blackberry, black cherry and elderberry - layered with ripe plum and a subtle floral lift reminiscent of violets. A long finish and hints of earth add further complexity.

Grown in the warm hills of Tibaani in Kakheti, this Saperavi reflects both the intensity of the grape and the character of the region. The wine is crafted in a natural, expressive style, allowing the fruit to ferment with a small amount of residual sugar that gives the wine its gently off-dry balance. The result is a powerful yet harmonious expression of Saperavi, combining depth, structure and approachability.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and generous, with rounded tannins that give structure without overpowering the fruit. Bright acidity keeps the wine lively and balances the touch of natural sweetness.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

NATURAL WINES BY GELOVANI CELLAR

Akaki Gelovani trained as a lawyer in Tbilisi. He started making wine in 2006 in his father's garage, with family and friends pressing grapes together every year. Singing traditional Georgian polyphony brought him together with the monk and winemaker Father Gabriel, who became his mentor. His first commercial bottling came in 2017. He now has nearly 5 hectares at Tibaani in eastern Kakheti, with his cellar in the village of Tskluleti, growing Mtsvane, Rkatsiteli, Kisi and Saperavi.

Everything ferments with wild yeasts in qvevri, clay vessels buried in the ground, then moves to a second qvevri for another 6 to 9 months. Skin contact is long: around three months for the Mtsvane, six for the Rkatsiteli 2022 and seven for the Kisi. No sulphur is added. The whites come out deep amber, and the Saperavi is dark and powerful. The 2024 Saperavi was bottled off dry at 15.5%.
