NATURAL WINES BY MASSA VECCHIA
Massa Vecchia is a small farm outside Massa Marittima in the Upper Maremma, Tuscany. Fabrizio Niccolaini dropped his maths studies to found it with his wife Patrizia Bartolini in 1985. After a decade with Francesca and a few collaborators in charge, Fabrizio came back in 2019 and now runs it with his sons Vasco and Tosca. There are 3.6 hectares of unirrigated vines, alongside olives and grain, on shale, clay and chalky marl.
Grapes include Sangiovese, Merlot, Alicante, Malvasia Nera, Aleatico and Vermentino. Reds ferment in open chestnut vats with long macerations, then age in large old barrels, while the Rosato is made in steel. Sulphur is only used in the vineyard, never in the cellar. Around 15,000 bottles a year means the wines are always scarce. We stock the Rosato di Toscana.
