NATURAL WINES BY CHRISTOPHER BARTH

Christopher Barth farms 7 hectares around Alzey in southern Rheinhessen. A Geisenheim graduate, he was working in IT when his uncle's sudden death left him the vineyards, and he took the chance to farm them his own way. The soils change from plot to plot, with volcanic Melaphyr in Alzey and limestone in Albig. He grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Weissburgunder, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau.

Everything ferments with wild yeasts and no temperature control, mostly in steel with a share in large old wooden Fuder casks. He keeps each plot and grape apart and blends little by little as he tastes, adding small amounts of sulphur at bottling only if needed. Melaphyr is his Riesling from the volcanic site, Fluhr is old-vine Silvaner given long ageing on its lees, and Rot vom Grün is a semi-carbonic co-ferment of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.
