Franz plays with Barley & Grapes is a natural wine crafted by Franz Weninger, in the Burgenland region in Austria.

This rosé wine is unique, as it is made with BOTH Blaufränkisch and Hops!

We hear it is inbetween the flavours of a dark beer and a quirky wine.

NATURAL WINES BY WENINGER

Weninger is Franz Weninger's family estate in Horitschon, where the family has made wine since 1828. In 1997 his father was among the first Austrians to buy vines across the border near Sopron, a historic home of Blaufränkisch, known in Hungary as Kékfrankos, and Franz took over the Hungarian side in 2000. They farm around 50 hectares in total, on soils from iron-rich loam in Hochäcker to gneiss and mica schist in the Steiner vineyard and lime at Ofen.

Ferments are spontaneous, with old barrels, amphora and concrete instead of new oak. The fun is comparing Blaufränkisch across sites: Hochäcker from 40-year-old vines, Kirchholz from vines up to 60 years old, Ofen from their coolest vineyard at 340 metres. For everyday drinking there is Ponzichter and Rozsa Petsovits, a dark rosé named after Franz's grandmother, plus the Franz Plays experiments.
