Moscato 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Jean Yves Peron, in the Savoie region in France. This wine is made with Moscato grapes, grown in Piedmonte, Italy.
The legendary Jean-Yves Peron farms in Savoie in the French Alps, and is seen as one of the O.G’s of the region.
Since 2017 he has also run I Vicini - "the neighbours" - a negociant project working with chemical-free growers just over the border on the Italian side of the Alps. The Moscato comes from Giorgio Barbero in Asti, Piedmont - Moscato d'Asti country, which most people associate with light, sweet, barely-there fizz. Jean-Yves does something else with it entirely…
This is made as a full orange wine: two weeks of whole-bunch maceration, then three months of pigeage punching down the skins by hand, then ageing in 300-litre barrels. At 14% alcohol, it has weight but feels quaffable at the same time. This is not a Moscato for people who enjoy Moscato d'Asti... This is a Moscato for people who did not think they liked Moscato!
Expect a vibrant amber colour, tropical fruit, orange oils, sherbet, fig, dried apricot, tomato leaf, mild medicinal herbs, a salty edge and tea-like tannins on the finish with a touch of effervescence too. A proper, fascinating orange wine!
As with all Jean-Yves Peron wines, try to finish in one sitting as delicious as they are, they may not hold the next day
