Some Kind Of Peace 2023 (Olafur Arnalds collab) is a natural wine crafted by Jas Swan of Katla Wines, in the Rheinhessen region in Germany. This  white but slightly macerated wine is made a blend of with 40% Kerner and 60%  Riesling grapes, and is a special, limited edition collaboration wine between Katla and grammy-nominated artist Ólafur Arnalds. We have just got this in and not tried it yet, but Jas Swan of Katla wines tells us it is a dry orange wine whereby the hand-destemmed grapes of Kerner are placed together with the direct press juice of Riesling, and are sealed off for 2 weeks without oxygen access, creating a fermentation within the directly pressed juice and within the Kerner grapes.

We're told to expect light tannins with an oxidative style of wine featuring notes of brioche, cedar, honey and flowers.

The grapes are sourced from Piri Natural in the Nahe region, grown on clay and sandy soils, and the wine is aged in used Barrique barrels.

We ship every Wednesday. Order by Tuesday 10am.

NATURAL WINES BY KATLA WINES

Katla Wines is Jasmin 'Jas' Swan, who came to wine through restaurants, including two and a half years as a sommelier at Dill in Reykjavík. She made her first vintage, 2,500 litres, in Brauneberg on the Mosel in 2019, worked from the Staffelter Hof cellar, and is now based in Wöllstein, Rheinhessen. Most grapes come from friends like Andi Mann, Niklas Rückrich and Piri Naturel, plus a tiny plot of her own.

Jas often blends red and white grapes, uses PiWi varieties like Regent and Cabernet Blanc, and favours semi-carbonic macerations for light, often low-alcohol wines. Cuvées change every year, runs are often under 1,000 bottles, and labels feature drag queens she collaborates with. Look for Queendom, made with drag artist Pandora Nox, the Kiki pét-nat, the rosé-style Heks and the Pinot Noir Alison. Jas also runs Back of the Van, a travelling natural wine fair.
