Mas del Gaio from Escoda-Sanahuja is an orange wine made in the Conca de Barbera by Joan Ramon, using his old vines of Grenache Blanc, Macabeu and Parellada. Perellada (50%), Garnacha blanca (25%), Macabeu (25%). This top wine from Escoda-Sanahuja is aged for 8 months on the lees in Qvevri Amphora, before being transferred to old oak barrels.

Mas del Gaio is somewhat tropical, somewhat salty, somewhat fruity. A lengthy finish and a real treat to enjoy!

WHAT IS ORANGE WINE?

Orange wines are actually white wines, but with a different winemaking process - they’re made by fermenting the juice with the grape skins, which is mostly done with red wines, not white. This extra step adds tannins, flavor, and a unique color to the wine.
Because of the skin contact, orange wines tend to have more herbal, aromatic notes, and they can also have a bit of bitterness depending on the grape, how long the skins are left in contact with the juice, and the vessel used for maturation. Unlike most white wines, they can also feature tannins (which are formed from the skins, which white wines do not use). Orange wines are a style that brings out some really interesting flavors that many people adore for their unique properties, whether easy going or complex.
