GABRIO BINI | SERRAGHIA WINE
Gabrio Bini is a legend in the natural wine world, making his incredibly unique wines on the hot, volcanic island of Pantelleria (Sicily).
These amphora wines are not cheap, but despite our reservations on price, we have to say they have touched absolutely everyone we have shown them to - truly remarkable energy and flavour expressions like no other. Expect the ungrafted old vines from Serraghia to be unique.... Gabrio Bini makes his wines fruity, acidic, earthy, aromatic, concentrated, and even a bit rugged and wild! Popular wines include the Gabrio Bini Bianco, Rosato, Heritage and Giotto Reserva, named after his son Giotto Bini.Read more below...
Yes, the prices have risen this vintage from the winemaker, but also with increased shipping costs from the island. We have tried the 2022 vintage of Bianco and Rosato and THEY ARE AWESOME!
From architect to legendary winemaker
The wines all start with sustainably farmed Zibibbo (a.k.a. Muscat of Alexandria) as well as several different red varieties, including Syrah which is unusual there. The grapes from very old vines, some over 100 years old, are plouged by horse then tended and harvested by hand, then left to ferment (with skin contact) slowly in terracotta amphorae partially buried under the ground IN the vineyard to keep cool from the sweltering heat.
Expressive and energetic wines actually worth the price tag
One interesting fact about Gabrio Bini is with his love for Jura wines, he took some Savagnin vine clippings from Pierre Overnoy and Poulsard from Stephane Tissot.
He planted them on his high altitude vineyard and releases a very small batch of, rather pricey, wines from it. This is the Parisien Mon Amore, which only 51 bottles are made and costs a staggering 1648€.
