The forgotten grape...

Guccione and Animals

Being a farm with horses, pigs, chickens and more - the animals on the Guccione estate are present when you visit, which we loved seeing! However, the animals have a more important aspect when it comes to the Holistic approach to farming. From a manure perspective too, as Guccione states in our Documentary "The Poop these guys do is precious!"

Francesco Guccione farms many of his vines with a Pergola system, which he calls a Tendone. This is a way to protect the grapes from the hot Sicilian sun, and something he states will be more and more important in the future with climate change heating up the region.

Guccione wines from Ceresa, Monreale

Francesco Guccione works the land inherited from his family, who themselves instead farmed for the cooperative so unlike Francesco who makes his own wines. With a lot of soul and passion going into his craft, his holistic approach in the vines and non-interventionalist style in the cellar gives very expressive interpretations of grapes like Trebbiano, Perricone, Caterratto and Nerelo Mascalese.

Guccione is a patient man, and often holds back vintages until they have seen enough barrel aging to shine in a different light, for example the P16 which is a Perricone with 6 years Elevage in 3000l oak barrels, or the T14, which sees 8 years aging on a 2014 vintage of Trebbiano.
