Côte de Flon 2023 is a natural wine crafted by Marto Wines, in the Rheinhessen region in Germany. This NEW white wine is made with Riesling, Silvaner, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir (direct press) grapes.
It has been aged in both new 500-liter barrels and larger older neutral barrels, imparting a refined, elegant note of oak - this gives it a creamy character different to many of other Marto Wines - we love this rounded edge for what it is!
This wine is evolving! At first in Summer 2025, we got slightly lower acidity, chalky touches, soft apple, elderflower, vanilla essence, gala melon and salty elements. Truly a creamy banger for the price!!!
And drinking now in December 2025 it has evolved to become more tropical, with pineapple aspects and sharper acidity where the creamyness is less apparent. Quite cool to see this evolution!
Marto Wines thoughts on the Côte de Flon 2023
A warm spring was followed by a very dry summer, which placed particular demands on us. The vegetation, which is an important component for humus formation in our farm's cycle, grew very poorly. Shortly before the start of harvest, after almost 12 weeks without any significant rainfall, it rained more in just a few days (over 200 litres per square meter) than it had rained the entire previous year.
The excessive water caused some grape clusters to burst, necessitating a quick start to harvest. We harvested many vineyards in three passes to remove any burst berries before rot sets in. This allowed us to give the remaining grapes even more time to ripen to perfection. As a result, we have very exciting wines in the cellar that offer everything from acidity and freshness to full-ripe complexity. The 2023 tastes very lively, vibrant and complex and, in our opinion, has very good aging potential.
