NATURAL WINES BY STÉPHANE ORIEUX
Stéphane Orieux is the third generation at Domaine de la Bregeonnette in Vallet, in the heart of Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine near Nantes. His grandfather started in 1946 with five hectares, and his father Joseph bought the Bregeonnette estate. Joseph was one of the first growers around Nantes to stop using chemicals, and the estate was certified in 1992. Stéphane took over in 1997, stopped raising livestock and grew the vineyard to 14 hectares, mostly on mica-schist.
Grapes are picked by hand and fermented with native yeasts, and the Muscadet spends around 10 months on its lees in underground glass-lined tanks. Alongside Melon de Bourgogne he grows Folle Blanche for Gros Plant, his signature wine, plus Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and he makes an amphora-aged cuvée called Eonios. We have his Sauvignon, a crisp, fresh Loire white.
