NATURAL WINES BY STROHMEIER
Franz and Christine Strohmeier make elegant wines in St. Stefan ob Stainz, West Styria, Austria. Their vines grow on steep Koralpe slopes at around 400 metres, on gneiss, schist and loam, and some are up to 50 years old. Besides Blauer Wildbacher and Chardonnay they grow fungus-resistant PiWi grapes. They are part of Schmecke das Leben, the group of five Styrian natural winemakers who help each other on certain topics and share their collective knowledge.
Their focus is biodiversity in the vineyard and time in the cellar. Tlz means Trauben, Liebe und Zeit (grapes, love and time), and the numbered Tlz wines get no added sulphur. Everything ages in used oak, acacia and chestnut barrels for up to two years. The range also runs to playful frizzantes like the Schiller and a Brut Nature rosé. They also make a wonderful Riesling, and their wines are incredible for ageing.
